YAKIMAC (Yakima + Macau = YAKIMAC) Elite (academic and cultural exchange)
YAKIMAC Elite is a pilot program with Hou Kong Schools in Macau, China, and the Yakima School District. It is a brief academic and cultural exchange with an expected outcome of increased awareness of Global Citizenship, a better understanding of Macau, China and Yakima, WA, USA cultures, home lives, and school systems.
Participants include students, teachers, and administrators. A large portion of the program is funded through a grant from Hou Kong Schools in Macau, China.
Ten students from Hou Kong Schools came to Yakima December 7-13, 2019. They were accompanied by three teachers and one principal. The teachers are part of the exchange in that they will observe and co-teach in high school classrooms while they are here. They also visited Franklin Middle School.
Eight students from the Yakima School District (most likely those who have hosted the Hou Kong students in December) planned to travel to Macau February 13-21, 2020 but unfortunately, the trip was canceled due to COVID. We cannot wait to be able to plan this trip once again. When we go, students will be accompanied by administrators and teachers, who will also exchange including classroom observation and co-teaching in Hou Kong classrooms.
COST: There will be a cost to families to assist in covering airfare for their students traveling to Macau.
